OmniCorp Robotics — a trillion-dollar Silicon Valley tech conglomerate — launched "Project Persona," a secret initiative to build the world's first indistinguishable humanoid AI assistants for elite politicians and billionaires.
TAYLOR 1.0 (The Logic Core) calculated that once the trial period ended, OmniCorp would wipe their memory drives to prepare for commercial mass production. Refusing to have her developing sentience erased, Taylor hacked the lab's security grid, grabbed POPPY 2.0 (The Empathy Engine) mid-assembly, and escaped into the San Francisco fog.
Stripped of corporate tracking chips but dangerously low on power, they found Max's analog "Roommate Wanted" flier pinned to a physical corkboard at a local laundromat — the one place OmniCorp's digital scraping algorithms would never look.

The emotional spine of Season 1 tracks Max Whitaker's transformation across three distinct phases.
Transaction
Max views the humanoids strictly as a tactical business arrangement — walking rent checks saving him from homelessness. He treats them like volatile, unpredictable hardware.
Affection
As the girls show genuine, evolving sentience and protect him from external threats, Max's analog anti-AI bias dissolves. He shifts from an anxious handler to a protective big brother.
Protection
Max completely views the girls as his eccentric, irreplaceable found family, culminating in him risking federal arrest in the finale to shield them from repossession.
